Shaughnessy’s Irish Pub in Syracuse is Ready to Open this May!

Sports-friendly Irish Pub Shaughnessy’s in Syracuse opens its doors this May!

Irish Pubs in SyracuseWe are excited to announce that our second restaurant at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown will be opening with a full menu on May 22, 2017. Shaughnessy’s, a sports-friendly Irish Pub in Syracuse will feature a classic sports pub menu, 13 craft beers on tap and every major sports television package for the 21 televisions circling the island bar. For Syracuse University sports fans and happy hour seekers alike, Shaughnessy’s (conveniently located downtown on the corner of Harrison and Warren Streets) is the place to dine, drink and unwind. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner!

The name derived from owner Ed Riley’s first Irish Setter, Shaughnessy, who didn’t mind the occasional beer.

The classic watering hole and eatery is alive with Orange spirit. In fact, all you have to do is look down. The floors are made from the hardwood used by the Syracuse Nationals NBA team, which was moved from the Onondaga County War Memorial to serve as the pub’s floor. You could say that Shaughnessy’s brings a whole new meaning to the term, “home court advantage.”

With a wide-selection of draft beer, a signature cocktail menu, comfort food sized to share and a Reuben that’s arguably the best in town, come stop by and enjoy a bite to eat or refreshing drink at our Irish Pub in Syracuse the next time you are in town!

The Story Behind our Lobby’s Mural at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown

Lobby's Mural at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown

Our Lobby’s Mural at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown and the Story Behind It.

A picture is worth a thousand words or so the saying goes. Whether a first time visitor or frequent traveler, it’s hard not to stop and stare at the large painting that hangs behind our front desk. Yet, do you know the history behind our lobby’s mural at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown?

Our historic mural, which depicts 20 key events during the first 100 years of Syracuse’s history, was painted by Carl Roters back in 1949. A few of the depicted events include the discovery of salt springs near the shore of Onondaga Lake and the formation of the Iroquois Confederacy. Roters was a professor at Syracuse University’s College of Fine Arts, retiring in the early 60s before passing away in 1989. For this painting, Roters used short strokes which gives a feeling of movement. The artist who restored the mural and was able to see Roter’s work up close, describes it as a masterpiece.

The painter and art restorer, Marek Mularski, of Auburn, Mass., cleaned decades worth of tobacco smoke and coal dust which had darkened the mural over the years, partly due to the hotel’s original furnace which burned coal. The vigorous cleaning process brightened up the mural, making it identical to how it looked back in 1949.

In addition to the mural, Roters also completed four panels of work in our Cavalier Room.

The next time you are a guest of ours at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown or just passing through, be sure to take a moment to stop and admire the magnificent artwork that is displayed in our lobby. It is exciting that these historic works of art continue to have a place at our hotel. You can learn more about the story of our lobby’s mural at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown by clicking here.
