Discover how “together” can be the most beautiful place to be… especially when on a romantic getaway in Syracuse!
Say “I Love You” with a romantic weekend in Syracuse! Few think of the Salt City as a “destination” for romance, especially in the colder winter months, yet it’s a wonderful place to fall in love all over again with both that special person in your life and the Central NY area.
Skate The Day Away!
The only way this long-standing holiday-time tradition could be made better is as a skate for two! The Clinton Square Ice Rink is one of the city’s most popular destinations during the winter, opening at the end of November and closing in March. Lace up a pair of skates, hit the ice, and heat things up with your better half.
Take a Walk on The Wild Side
Open year-round, The Rosamond Gifford Zoo is the perfect date to bring your childhood back to life. Your “puppy love” can bloom around the animals of the world, with special events like Snow Leopard Days in January/February making this a “purrfect” date out that your heart will never forget.

The Certified Wedding Specialists at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown have four sure-fire tips to make your frozen fairy-tale come true!
It may not be “on season” in terms of nuptials, but this time of year is full of festivities that you should be mindful of when planning your winter wedding. Pre-formal invitation “Save the Date” cards are advised to ensure that everyone on your list has ample time to make arrangements to attend. Also, remember that it gets darker earlier which affects many details from travel schedules to photography lighting.
Baby, It’s Cold Outside!
No matter if you have an outdoor or indoor ceremony, the crisp weather needs to be considered when choosing attire. Winter weather accessories, from faux-fur wraps to velvet blazers, will keep your entire party cozy, comfortable, and chic! Also, don’t forget simple beauty prep from moisturizers to chapstick.
Many brides decide to “keep it simple” and opt for traditional holiday themes. Just because you want a ceremony as “sweet as a candy cane” doesn’t mean it has to look like one! Pick a winter palette that fits your personal style, from shimmering metallics to bold jewel tones! This also applies to your floral décor and menu choices. Warm beverages are a welcoming sight for attendees, as well as festive, heartier fare full of winter favorites. Who wouldn’t want a gingerbread cookie place setting?
Choose the Perfect Venue
The perfect venue is crucial when planning your big day during winter, as inclement weather is a normal occurrence. This can mean extra travel time between venues, which can be alleviated by having both your ceremony and reception at one venue! And if that venue happens to be a historic hotel (and one of the top wedding venues in Central NY), travel woes will be minimal with room blocks available for all guests!

Here’s how we create dream weddings in Syracuse (without breaking the bank)
We believe that every wedding can be fabulous, so don’t ever let a limited budget stop you from dreaming. With a little creativity (and a whole lot of planning) your day can be everything that you had ever hoped it would be (and more).
It’s with this approach in mind, that we here at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown have created affordable and flexible wedding packages that can be adjusted to fit every budget. One of the most customizable is our Finger Lakes Ballroom Package, whose eponymous venue is the most modern, yet still beautiful, “blank canvas” space in our hotel. This area can be anything you want it to be – perfect when you are planning a wedding on a budget.
Tips from Our Certified Wedding Specialists
Once you have set your budget and chosen your venue, we know it can sometimes be difficult to find ways to keep your wedding dreams and cut corners at the same time, but it’s not as difficult as it might seem. Here’s a few great tips from our wedding planners on how to keep costs down while holding on to your dream day plans!
Wedding Dress – Rent your dress for the day. You can still be couture with luxury attire rental services that will loan you the wedding dress of your dreams for just a fraction of the price.
Cake – Consider a “display cake” with a larger (less expensive, but still decorated) sheet cake available as your dessert course.
Ceremony – Hold your ceremony and reception in the same place! Have it on an “off” day (like a wonderful Wednesday), “off” season (such as being a dashing December bride) or even an “off” timeslot (mornings will look magnificent in your photos).
Flowers – Not only are they the perfect natural décor, but when seasonal and local these blooms will be available at peak supply and a much lower cost.
Food – Skip the cocktail hour hors d’oeuvres if you plan on a full menu for dinner, or, change it up completely and have an evening reception with specialty cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Another thought is to consider having a brunch as your reception.
Music/Photos/Etc. – These supplemental details, while important, can easily be accommodated to fit your budget. Our wedding planners can help you plan the extras, and also recommend their favorite vendors who have made the dreams of many of our brides come true! Just ask, and we’ll be happy to help!
Planning a Baby Shower in Syracuse? Here’s a few ideas to get you started
Are you planning a baby shower? Chances are you’ve discovered the many small yet vital details that need to be planned before the date is set on the calendar. Here’s a few of our favorite ideas to help you get organized:
Consult with the guest of honor
Sometimes, surprises don’t always go over very well. Certain details (should the shower be pre or post baby, number of guests, inviting the father or other male friends) should probably be discussed with the mom-to-be first – just to be sure.
Plan a party that she would like
Sounds simple, but don’t lose focus on who it’s actually for – try to make it something she will absolutely love and remember forever. e.g If she’s not a fan of country music, best to leave them off the playlist, and if she’s more comfortable with smaller groups then think about having a lovely afternoon tea or a small brunch celebration with her closest friends and family.
Serve a well-rounded menu that everyone can enjoy.
Keep it easy to eat (finger or fork food is best) but not simple in design – tiny bites of something delicious are always a hit! Mocktails over cocktails are a sure-fire way to keep every guest included (and will help with the budget as well).
Keep games tasteful and uncomplicated
What may seem like harmless fun to some may embarrass or make others uncomfortable, so stay with games that are easy and include everyone. Keep it fun and lighthearted. If time is short, consider skipping the gift opening.
Choose a venue that will help make the day a surefire success!
Every mother-to-be should feel pampered, so what could be better than choosing the Marriott Syracuse Downtown for her baby shower. Our event spaces are beautiful and diverse and can adapt for any number of guests, providing the perfect luxurious surroundings to make the mother-to-be feel even more special. Our very own event planners will help to customize the menu, plan decor and any other details that you may need, ensuring that everyone, especially the mother-to-be, has a wonderful time!
Wedding favors that your guests will actually want to take home
Gone are the days when we’d leave a wedding with a bag of jaw-breaking candy wrapped tightly in a piece of tulle. Now, guests (and the wedding couple) want something more memorable – something special, and especially something a little more personal.
We’re fortunate to host many weddings at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown, and along with the joy of all the event planning comes the fun of seeing new ideas and often helping to brainstorm and create something different. One thing we’ve really noticed, is that wedding favors change constantly, and although they have taken on more importance, they have also become more fun and affordable. The options are endless (and they no longer have to make a big dent in your wedding budget).
- Monograms will always be a popular choice, but now names are being placed on wine bottles, glasses, and even the bride’s favorite bar of supermarket chocolate.
- Miniature plants in vintage containers are perfect for the DIY couple, or a vintage-inspired bride who wants to give a gift that will be both practical and pretty.
- Edibles are big right now (and one of our favorite trends). Sometimes, we’re hungry after a wedding, so who wouldn’t like to find a beautifully wrapped cupcake or a bag of chocolate truffle pops next to their place setting?
- Inexpensive Polaroid cameras are finding their way back onto the table – making an instant souvenir for everyone and adding even more fun and laughter to the occasion.
Weddings are a wonderful opportunity to share your happiness with those you love and care about, so why not take some time to personalize your wedding favors and create a beautiful memory for your guests as well.
